Mardi 25 octobre : Flores-Bali

On y reviendra demain.

A suivre : 4e partie Singapour...

Tuesday 25th october : Flores-Bali

On arrival we took a 'fixed price' taxi to Ubud (195 000 Idr) at the airport. This is a good system, don't get misled by the taxi touts outside the airport offering 'special prices'. There is an official taxi bureau at the airport, you state your destination, pay their cheaper price, take your receipt, and your taxi arrives on the main route, easy ! Arrived at Teba House Hotel just after 2 pm. We have a standard room with fan for 200 000 Idr per night. Had a walk around the town and market and changed some money. D was hungry, but as it was only 5 pm we bought some snacks to eat on our terrace. In Ubud market you can buy your sarong and scarf, (these are correct dress for funeral ceremonies), there are lots of gorgeous ones to choose from and it's fun bargaining ! Spoke to Argus later about our visa overrun, he said it would be better if we can change our flight, explained that it would cost 2 million Idr ! He has taken our passports and 750 000 Idr each to bribe the officials to get new visas. Had our snacks followed by an early night.

Wesnesday 26th october : Ubud

Had a lovely breakfast including a platter of fresh fruit. Had a walk through the Monkey Forest, it began raining heavily so we took shelter with some locals for 20 mins. Once the sun returned we continued our walk. I like this place, it has some lovely trees, and wonderful foliage, there are little statues and temples everywhere. Of course there are lots of monkeys, but they tend to wait at the entrances where the tourists buy them food from the banana sellers. Had a walk to the market, arranged to meet D later so that I could have a look at clothes etc; in peace! Bargained for a lovely blouse for mum and a dress for me. D has bought a scarf for his sarong and a lovely wooden mask. Had lunch at the Balina restaurant, it's off the main road and away from the expensive tourist places, the food is good as are the portions! After a rest we returned to Monkey Forest to watch a funeral celebration. These ceremonies are so colourful and vibrant, this was was held in a private temple but we could watch the dancing by looking over the walls! Spoke to Argus, he has left our passports at immigration, along with the bribe of course!

Thursday 27th october : Ubud

Hired a motorcycle from Teba House and drove to Ubud Clinic for D's blood test (148 000 Idr) results tonight! Drove by a temple where preparations were being carried out for a funeral ceremony, we were invited inside (we always carry our sarongs just in case) by the nephew of the deceased. All the family and villagers were helping with the preparations, all is colour and laughter, a celebration of life. Much better than the dreadful all black affairs in Europe! The deceased was 95 years old, he was 'sleeping' on a bed placed on a raised dais with gold curtains pulled around. In two days time he will be washed with holy water, and other ceremonies will take place, we have been invited. Continued with our trip and stopped at a 'White Water' rafting place. We followed a group of participants through some rice fields, and down hundreds of steep steps through the jungle, to reach the river in a ravine. Watched them getting instructions and then go, looks fun but not for me ! Had a hard walk back up through the jungle to our 'bike. Returned to Ubud where we had our lunch. Back out later for D's results, visited the large supermarket on the outskirts, it's on two floors. We bought some drink, food and lovely souvenirs there, plus a large bag to carry them all ! Back to Teba House where the family were just returning from the temple, the women looked so beautiful in lovely lace outfits with flowers in their hair. Agus' mother gave us some offerings of food from the temple, how at ease I feel here with these friendly people. I love Asia, the people, their friendliness, their fashion of living and sharing, the colour and harmony. It will be hard to return home...

Friday 28th october : Ubud

Rain overnight, the garden looks lovely this morning. Drove to Sukawati market, had a puncture en-route, inner tube could not be repaired as it was too old! The motor and exhaust had to be taken off to remove the wheel, sat talking to passers-by as we waited. The bill was only 40 000 Idr ! At the market we visited a little workshop in the back streets and bought a lovely little mask. Watched the woodworkers in their huge hall and bargained for some souvenirs. Back to Ubud for lunch and then rested for a while. Out to the supermarket for supplies, bought some incense to take with us for the ceremony. Just arrived back as it began to rain really heavily, loaned our umbrellas to a French family who are staying here for a few days. Agus gave us our passports with their new visas, what a relief! Had our meal on the terrace watching the rain! We have a day's free rental of the bike in exchange for the money we paid for the inner tube.

Saturday 29th october : Ubud

Prepared for the ceremony and then had a little look around the market, very hot and a lot of tourists today. Saw a lovely dragon statue, hesitated but think we have enough souvenirs! Stopped at an agency and booked a tour for tomorrow at 200 000 Idr each, departure 8.30 am from the agency. At the temple the procession was just starting, we followed it to the big temple. Lots of people there and very hot. Prayers were said, offerings made and music played. The procession then went to the cemetery where more rituals were carried out. The cremation will be in 2 days time. D stopped to have some food, he was hungry, what a surprise! Changed some money en-route to the hotel. Told them we would be leaving Monday. Booked transport to Sanur for 50 000 Idr each. Had a good dinner at Balina, would strongly recommend this place. At the hotel we have been told we have the right to 1 free nights accommodation, problem is we have just booked our transport to Sanur, will try and change!

Sunday 30th october : Ubud

Agency can change our transport. While there we booked for the 'White Water' rafting tomorrow, I have decided that I can at least try it for D's sake ! For today's trip there are 2 young German girls and a Taiwanese women (Joy) going with us. It rained really heavily and we got soaked looking around the Royal temple at Mengwi. As Joy was interested in buying some pictures we made a stop at an art gallery. Some nice works there but very expensive! Taken to visit a coffee plantation where we were given a tasting. They have the world's most expensive coffee there (Luwak), at 40 $ a tiny cup it's out of our price range! It's made from the berries of a coffee plant that have been ingested by a civet cat and then excreted. These cats used to live in the wild but are now kept in small cages, this and the price are certainly deterrents! Visited the waterfall at Mungkyuti, a slippery descent after all the rain, we are certainly getting some exercise. Stopped by a restaurant to take some photos of the rice terraces, told our driver (Gusti) that for lunch we want somewhere inexpensive. He took us to a restaurant that had prices of 40 000 Idr for a soup, and 17 000 Idr for a coke, told him way out of our budget and we want to eat local, think he gets a commission from them ! Finally found a little place but the food was very spicy! Visited the hot springs at Permundium where we were able to relax in the water for 30 mins. On to Lovina where we were dropped off at the beach and told we had 15 mins to look around, while he took Joy to find some accommodation. We were besieged by vendors selling shells, pearls and wooden dolphins! Walked to a little nearby temple and then back to the meeting place. So pleased that we are not staying here! Set off for the return trip at 4.20pm, Gusti drove like a madman, it started raining again, D slept most of the way! At Ubud Gusti suggested a cheap local restaurant where his wife worked, The Kecak, it wasn't cheap at all and the food nowhere near as good as the Balina! I would not recommend this trip, it's too rushed, and why go all the way to Lovina for only 15 mins!

Monday 31st october : Ubud

It's 2.30 am and I can't sleep for worrying about the rafting! A car collected us at 8.45 am, at the site we were introduced to our guide Sena, who can speak French. We were equipped with helmets, life jackets and oars, told Sena I couldn't swim, he replied “don't worry neither can I “. After all the rain yesterday I was apprehensive as the current was quite strong. Given some instructions on rafting and off we went. A really exhilarating yet terrifying experience, I have never screamed so loud for so long! One really bad moment when the raft almost overturned on a particularly turbulent rapid. Sena made the raft go backwards over one of the rapids to make me scream louder, and then sidewards to soak us through! The gorges were wonderful though, with their lush vegetation and waterfalls. After 2 hours we arrived at the landing area, we were able to take a hot shower with towels, shampoo and soap provided. Had our lunch, which was included in the price. Had a nice walk back up to meet the car. So pleased that I went, it was an incredible experience, one I shall never forget. Taken back to the hotel where we had a rest, there was a knock at the door and it was Tonnie & Kes who had arrived yesterday. Despite the heat they have hired bicycles, we had tea with them and a nice chat. Went for a last look around the market, bargained hard for my lovely dragon, couldn't resist him after all ! Changed some money and had dinner at Balina, saw Tonnie & Kes as we were leaving and said our goodbyes. Had a drink on the terrace and then prepared our things for tomorrow. It has been lovely being here, but tomorrow we move on and more adventures await us…

Tuesday 1ster november : Ubud-Sanur

Had breakfast, paid our bill and gave the staff some well earned tips. A private car came to collect us and were were taken to the bus station, we paid an extra 10 000 Idr each to be dropped off at the hotel. Our room wasn't quite ready so we sat around the swimming pool for a while, and then had a little walk to the beach. Ate lunch at a local Waring, D bought a nice shirt for 70 000 Idr. Have a good room at the hotel, unpacked and then went back out, found a shop that hires bicycles so have arranged a days hire for tomorrow. It started raining heavily so we walked back towards the hotel and ate at a nearby restaurant.

Wesnesday 2nd november : Sanur

Collected our bikes (25 000 Idr) each. Cycled north to the port, D wants to go to Lebungan Island tomorrow. We negotiated a trip at 700 000 Idr return tickets for two people. I think it's expensive just to have a few hours on the Island, but D wants to go ! Found Hardy's supermarket and bought a picnic lunch to have on our terrace. Had a swim in the pool and a little rest. Back out on our bikes where we headed south to the beach. Cycled past lots of luxury 5* hotels with exotic gardens, huge swimming pools and private beach areas. From what I could see, most of the people staying in these places spend their days lying on the beach, drinking expensive cocktails, not impressed! Continued cycling until we arrived at a beach the locals use, lots of them in the sea and great to hear their laughter. Decided to take the bikes back tonight before we eat, the pedal fell off D's bike en route, luckily we didn't have too far to walk. No discount for the inconvenience, no surprise! Had a light meal at a restaurant and a glass of wine at the hotel.

Thursday 3rd november : Sanur

Booked our taxi with the hotel to leave at 6 am tomorrow. Transport for the Island arrived at 9.35 am, taken to the boat which left at 10.35 am. Arrived at Mushroom Bay harbour at 11 am. Offered another boat trip to go snorkelling, too expensive. Motorcycle hire was 70 000 Idr for 2 hours! We have already spent too much on this trip! Had a walk around to look at restaurants, they are so expensive here, finally found a cheaper one in the back streets. Back at the beach we tried snorkelling but no fish! Had lunch and then as I was paddling in the sea D called out that our boat was ready to go, rushed to get dressed and it left at 3 pm. Horrible trip as it kept bumping down into the water and I felt ill, really glad to be back on dry land. I didn't enjoy this trip, very expensive just to sit on the beach for a couple of hours, we could have done the same thing at Sanur for nothing! Back at the hotel we prepared our things and had a dip in the pool. Had a walk to Hardy's where we bought a snack for this evening. Bought a bottle of local wine and ate and drank on our terrace.

Friday 4th november : Sanur-Singapour

Up at 5.15am, the driver was waiting outside at 5.30am. We were given 2 packs of fresh fruit to take with us for breakfast. Paid our airport tax of 150 000 Idr each and went for a walk around the concourse, it's expensive here we paid 40 000 Idr for two cups of tea! Flight was on time.

To follow : Part 4 Singapore...
